How to Count Cards in Blackjack (the Simple Way)
Card counting isn't memorizing cards. You keep one number in your head. When lots of big cards are left in the shoe, the game is better for you, so you bet more.
Step 1: Give every card a number (Hi-Lo)
| Cards | Value |
|---|---|
| 2 3 4 5 6 (small) | +1 |
| 7 8 9 (middle) | 0 |
| 10 J Q K A (big) | −1 |
Step 2: Keep the running count
Start at 0 after the shuffle. Add the value of every card you see. Example: K, 5, 9, A, 3, 2 → −1 +1 +0 −1 +1 +1 = +1. A full deck always adds up to 0.
Step 3: Turn it into the true count
True count = running count ÷ decks left in the shoe. A running count of +6 with 3 decks left is a true count of +2. Look at the discard tray to guess how many decks are left.
Step 4: Bet more when the count is high
Each +1 of true count adds roughly 0.5% to your edge. Bet the minimum at low or negative counts, and raise your bet step by step as the true count climbs (for example 1 unit at +1, 2 at +2, 4 at +3).
Step 5: Know the basic strategy first
